Any diet plan you try is destined to fail, if you don't fully have your head in the game. So, as part of this Fast Burn Challenge kick-off, I really want to address the psychology of dieting, and the power of mind over weight. What do people need to know from the beginning, when they're trying to make this kind of change in their life? - Success really depends upon having a resilience mindset, a growth mindset, so that no matter how many failures you've had in the past, you know, what barriers you've had, what you do is learn from them, and are determined to push on through your challenges. - So, in your professional opinion, what's the top reason that dieters fail?
Well, one of the main reasons, and research shows us, that
dieters fail, is that they can have unresolved trauma, or stressors that they
have not dealt with. And what happens is, people try to cope through their
stressors, or cope through trauma, with unhealthy behaviors. And too often,
those unhealthy behaviors may be eating too much, eating the wrong foods,
drinking too much. So, it's really important that you really take a check-up
from the neck up, I would call it, in terms of looking at where you are
emotionally, so that you don't fall into those traps. - Well, what's really
going on with the yo-yo dieter, psychologically, in your mind? - In my mind,
with yo-yo dieters, they try, they hit one barrier, slip up, you know, one
French fry or two cookies, and then they stop. They just throw the whole thing
out. And so, the key is to really practice mindfulness, and understand that,
you know, that the beauty of life, is that, you may fail one second, but the
next second, you can try again. So, if you find that you're a yo-yo dieter,
like chalk up to whatever it was that caused you to eat that cookie or those
French fries, and say, you know what, in the next five minutes, the next 20
minutes, I'm going to try and do better. And to really have a plan, which is
why it's so important that, what your show is focusing on, in terms of looking
at energy in, looking at energy out, and really coming up with a plan, so that
you can get back on the horse.
There's not many things that we do in life that turn out
perfectly the first time, and it's that repetition that teaches us. It's what
we learn when we fail. So, yo-yo dieters really need to be kinder to
themselves. And if they fail, say, you know what, I'm going to get back on this
plan and try again. - And you actually have four must-dos, before you start
your diet. So, you say, "write the real". What do you mean? - So,
"write the real" means, you can't start until you know where you are.
So, don't be afraid to step on the scale. Get a real number, and write it down,
as really a starter for you, in terms of as an attempt to monitor your
progress. And also, you want to identify your purpose on this path. It's not
just about looking good in your clothes; we all want that. But what's your
ultimate purpose? You want to be healthier because maybe you want to outlive
your parents, you want to be healthier so you can walk your child to the bus
stop, you want to be healthier so you can play with them. Whatever it is,
identify your purpose, and tie that in to what you're doing. And remember, your
purpose is your talent, your gifts, and your values, so, think about those
things.
The other, is to set short-term goals. And one of those
short-term goals could be, if you weigh 200 pounds, and the next day you have
not gained any, that's a goal. That's something to really be thoughtful, and to
congratulate yourself for. So, it's small steps that win the race. And lastly,
is to really enlist the support of others. Tell people what you're trying to
do, so they can remind you, as my friends do, like, you weren't going to keep
eating more French fries," that all helps. And you know what this spells
out? It spells out wise. So, when you were trying to lose weight, be wise.
Think about your (indistinct) connection. So, really project forward, in a way
that keeps you positive, and really on this journey. I thank you for, not just
your insight, but actually willing to work with our Fast Burn Challenge.
Because, once again, the mind and the mindset are definitely ground zero. So,
we'll be checking in with you, over these next nine weeks.
